Everybody loves a good vacation, and we’re no exception here in the US. But while travel fantasies often involve more far-flung adventures, something like 85% of Americans’ vacations are actually domestic. That’s 2.9 billion person-trips within the US every year, and in 2019 domestic travelers spent nearly a trillion dollars ($972 billion) on their trips.

The numbers prove just how much we Americans like to get out and see our own nation, but with all the options, what destinations stand out? Forbes answers that question every year with a new list that highlights some of the best places in the US to travel to, and this year’s list includes Virginia Beach.

The destinations are presented in no particular order, and include everything from small towns and mountain ranges to big, sexy beaches. From Alaska to Hawaii, and from the Catskills to Walla Walla, WA.

Here’s some of what Forbes had to say about The Beach:

Stretching for 35 miles along the Atlantic coast, Virginia Beach is easygoing and eclectic, with attractions to satisfy travelers of all ages. “Picturesque beaches, outstanding outdoor recreation, growing arts and food scenes—all within a few hours’ flight from most of the United States,” says Catalano. Pick up the Get Outdoors Pass for discounted admission to whale watching, dolphin kayaking tours, nature preserves and more. Watch 17 sailing teams glide for glory in the Worrell 1000, a 1,000-mile catamaran race that returns to Virginia Beach in May. Or ride the waves in the East Coast Surfing Championship, the world’s longest-running competition, in August.

We’re particularly happy to see more than just our beautiful beaches mentioned. While the oceanfront will always be the main draw—it sees something like 20 million visitors each year—the city has a lot more than just sun and sand to satisfy.

Included in the short write-up are shout-outs to local favorites like the Museum of Contemporary Art and Waterman’s Surfside Grill. Mentioned above, Virginia Beach’s Get Outdoors Pass makes it easy for one to find and access discounts for a multitude of outdoor activities.

Use the pass to to get to one of our most popular attractions, First Landing State Park in the northeast corner of the city. Among other things, it offers hiking trails and camp grounds in both wooded areas and the back dunes. It’s located on Cape Henry, also the home of the famous light houses.

The Virginia Aquarium is located a short drive from the oceanfront and is always a popular attraction, and if one is seeking more culture, the city’s young ViBe Creative District is a mural-adorned artist and artisan’s hub just a short drive from the beach. You’ll also find a farmer’s market, coffee shops and tea houses, art exhibits, distilleries, furniture shops, and more.

For more shopping options our young Town Center has 4,000 free parking spaces to help you access over 40 shops and over 20 restaurants. Highlights include Anthropologie, Lululemon, and Free People. Across Virginia Beach Boulevard, Pembroke is beginning redevelopment this year and will soon add even more shopping options to our central business district.
