In[HEIR]itance Project Virginia Arts Festival May 5-7

“We are divided now more than ever, and it is easier to remain in our chosen silos than it is to engage with our neighbors and communities. These divisions create barriers to civic dialogue and civil society. We believe that something magical happens when people gather together and open their hearts to those around them. And through this work, we are offering an open door for people to find just that. It is our hope that by learning more about each other, we can learn more about the world around us, and about how to make it a better place for everyone.”

    -The In(heir)itance Project

With a mission of “strengthening communities through storytelling,” this innovative national arts organization creates a space for communities to navigate challenging conversations through collaborative theater projects. In Coastal Virginia, citizens have been gathering to share their experiences of racism, and in this May weekend, those stories will come to life on stage in a new play, which sets local history within the context of the Book of Exodus. As In(heir)itance Project co-founder Jon Adam Ross puts it, the goal is to use our shared stories, traditions, and beliefs can help us imagine solutions for a better future.

    In This Moment May 15

Since coming to life in 2005, gold-selling hard rock provocateurs In This Moment have presided over a diehard fan base under the watch of a similar “mother” figure frontwoman Maria Brink—joined by co-founder and lead guitarist Chris Howorth, bassist Travis Johnson, guitarist Randy Weitzel, and Kent Dimmel. As millions convened upon the group’s otherworldly and unforgettable concerts, they quietly emerged as one of the most influential and impactful bands of the 21st century. To date, the quintet have garnered two gold singles—“Blood” and “Whore”—and one gold album, Blood [2012]. The latter notably launched a trifecta of Top 25 entries on the Billboard Top 200 with Black Widow [2014] and Ritual [2017]. Bringing their total stream tally well past 200 million as of 2020, Ritual elevated them to new creative and critical peaks as well. In a 4-out-of-5 star review, KERRANG! called it “their best vehicle to date” as Alternative Press claimed, “Maria Brink is the Lady Gaga of the metal world” and went on to add, “Ritual flourishes as the metal love child of art-pop, gospel, Morrissey and Johnny Cash that the world didn’t know it needed until now.” Between selling out headline tours coast-to-coast, the group performed in arenas everywhere alongside Disturbed and appeared at countless festivals from Rockville to Sonic Temple.

“It’s a joy to witness Arturo O’Farrill’s dedication to Latin Jazz as he rises from the piano, where he has just demonstrated his elegant command of it, and then swings over to conduct his 18-piece Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra. In addition to showcasing O’Farrill’s elegant piano artistry, the concert also showcased the pure notes of expertly played bass, saxophone and trumpets… [ending in] a dizzying crescendo, capturing the audience’s affection wholeheartedly.” – Miami Artzine

A six-time Grammy winner, Arturo O’Farrill was born into a musical family: his father Chico was a legendary Cuban composer, arranger, and conductor. The Struts May 24

he third full-length from British rock band The Struts, Strange Days came to life over the course of a charmed and frenzied burst of creativity last spring. After getting tested for COVID-19, singer Luke Spiller, guitarist Adam Slack, bassist Jed Elliott, and drummer Gethin Davies all moved into the Los Angeles home of Jon Levine, a producer who worked extensively on their acclaimed sophomore effort YOUNG & DANGEROUS (including the album’s chart-climbing lead single “Body Talks”). Within just ten days of couch-crashing at Levine’s house, The Struts had laid down nine original tracks and one masterful cover of a KISS B-side: a lean, mean body of work that amounts to their most glorious output to date.

“It was so much fun to make a record this way instead of getting everything done in between touring, working with multiple producers in multiple countries,” says Spiller. “We were all just burning to capture that excitement as much as we possibly could, and at times it felt like the songs were literally just falling from the sky.”

    The Smashing Pumpkins May 24

Formed in Chicago, IL in 1988, The Smashing Pumpkins released their heralded debut album Gish in 1991 and found mainstream success with 1993’s 4x multi-platinum Siamese Dream and 1995’s 10x multi-platinum Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. With over 30 million albums sold to date, the two-time GRAMMY®, MTV VMA, and American Music Award winning band remains one of the most influential alternative rock bands in the world.

Their monumental Shiny And Oh So Bright Tour took place in 2018, which sold over 300,000 tickets across North America and saw them playing sold-out arena shows at venues including The Forum, United Center and Madison Square Garden. The tour was the band’s first in nearly two decades to feature Corgan, Chamberlin and Iha, alongside Schroeder, bassist Jack Bates and keyboardist Katie Cole. Critics were quick to praise the tour as “a massive gift to their fans” (Uproxx), “a welcome reminder of why those early albums resonated in the first place” (SPIN), and “an unforgettably rewarding and often spectacular odyssey” (Forbes).
