A Great Place To Hit The Road

Virginia Beach is one of the best cities for drivers, according to a recent report from WalletHub.

They compared 100 cities using 30 metrics grouped into four categories: cost of ownership, traffic & infrastructure, safety, and access to vehicles & maintenance.

Some of the things they looked at were gas prices, car insurance rates, hours spent in congestion, number of days with precipitation, quality of roads and bridges, and Waze driver satisfaction ratings.

The best city in the country for drivers was our neighbor Raleigh, NC. They had particularly strong scores in the cost of ownership and safety categories.

Virginia Beach is in position 21 on the list. Our top scores were also in the two categories of safety and cost of ownership. Two other Hampton Roads cities are in the top fifty, with Chesapeake at 28 and Norfolk at 37.

Driving can be a joy for some, and can be a major source of frustration for others, even when on the same stretch of road. Either way, here in the US we’re often forced to do it. According to recent statistics, around 75% of American workers commute to work by car, either as a driver or a passenger.

American Car Dependence

The amount of time we spend in personal vehicles is due to the lack of alternatives in many areas, as well as the perceived convenience and flexibility that comes with car ownership. On average, Americans each spend nearly 300 hours a year driving.

The reliance on cars has had a significant impact on American society, shaping the built environment, driving consumer spending, and influencing cultural values.

As efforts to promote alternative modes of transportation continue, the use of cars in the US shows no signs of slowing down. As long as we’re still behind the wheel, we here in Hampton Roads can can be happy to have some of the more favorable conditions for drivers in the country.
