A Surprising Beauty Aid Down At The Seafood Market
And every grocery store

Like a lot of people I waited embarrassingly long to start taking my health seriously enough, but — like a lot of others — when I did, I went all out, reading up on as much as I could, and most important of all, I began cooking more often for myself, and much healthier.
I had already started exercising regularly and drinking more water and getting enough sleep, but had always had an embarrassingly limited understanding of nutrition. Vegetables, nuts, berries, beans, fiber…One thing that stood out for me in my search for knowledge was science’s assertion that we Americans suffer from so many chronic diseases because we keep our bodies in an inflamed state with our fatty, sugary diets.
An anti-inflammatory diet calls for foods high in Omega-3 fatty acids, and low in Omega-6 fatty acids, meaning something like sardines, a snack from my childhood, would be a great addition to my shopping list. In my next grocery haul I brought home five cans of the oily fish and began to eat them daily in an effort to quickly get on top of this aspect of my health.
On day four I looked in the mirror and found that I looked noticeably different. I looked younger somehow, and so peered closer and noted that the normally large pores on my cheeks had shrunk noticeably, and my skin generally looked healthier overall.

Why Sardines
Intellectual curiosity got the better of me, and on researching I found that sardines can help your skin in a number of ways. They’re — of course — one of the best sources of Omega-3’s, the anti-inflammatory agents that boast a number of health benefits, only one of them supporting glowing, healthier-looking skin.
They also provide a large amount of selenium which fights inflammation, neutralizes free radicals as an antioxidant, and works with Vitamin E to protect skin cells.
Sardines are also a great source of B vitamins, important in the production of collagen and elastin.
How To Eat
Sardines are a versatile ingredient that can be grilled, broiled, or broken up and included in a marinara sauce. They’re primarily consumed as snacks, however, and I grew up eating them on plain saltine crackers, sometimes with a big glob of yellow mustard.
Have yourself a few consecutive days of sardine snacks before an important engagement that you want to look your best for. At the very least, it’ll give you a boost of confidence for that big presentation or job interview.
Next to how healthy they are, perhaps the best thing about sardines is how cheap they are. Try the sardine challenge (1 small can per day for 5 days), and tell us below the difference, if any, that you see in your skin!
