A Major Milestone for Virginia’s Clean Energy Future

Virginia has taken another significant step toward becoming a leader in offshore wind energy with the completion of a major staging and pre-assembly project at Portsmouth Marine Terminal. Skanska, a global construction firm, recently finished work on the $223 million project, which will play a crucial role in supporting the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) initiative.

A Key Piece of Virginia’s Renewable Energy Push

Offshore wind energy has been a growing priority for Virginia, and this completed project at the Port of Virginia marks an important milestone in the state’s clean energy transition. The Portsmouth Marine Terminal will now serve as a hub for assembling and deploying massive wind turbine components, reinforcing the region’s position as a leader in offshore wind development.

Project Details and Enhancements

The staging project involved significant infrastructure upgrades, ensuring that the terminal could support the heavy equipment and logistics required for offshore wind operations. Key improvements include:

  • Reinforced piers to accommodate massive turbine components.
  • Heavy-lift pads designed for the storage and pre-assembly of wind turbines.
  • Dredging operations to allow for the transportation of large equipment.

These enhancements will enable the efficient movement of wind turbine parts and facilitate the full-scale development of the 2.6-gigawatt CVOW project, which is expected to power up to 660,000 homes once fully operational.

Economic and Environmental Impact

The completion of this project is not just a win for renewable energy—it’s also a boost for Virginia’s economy. The staging facility is expected to create hundreds of jobs in construction, logistics, and long-term maintenance roles. Additionally, by strengthening offshore wind infrastructure, Virginia is reducing its reliance on fossil fuels and advancing its goal of reaching 100% clean energy by 2050.

What’s Next for Virginia’s Offshore Wind Industry?

With this staging project complete, the next steps involve ramping up turbine assembly and installation for the CVOW project. The Port of Virginia is also well-positioned to attract future offshore wind investments, making it a critical player in the broader East Coast wind energy supply chain.
