Hampton Roads is one of the cleanest places to live in the country, according to a new report release by the American Lung Association.

Their yearly study found that Hampton Roads was one of ten US locations with the combination of low year-round particle pollution, zero days for high particle pollution, and zero days for high ozone. But we weren’t the only location in the Old Dominion included on the unordered list. Charlottesville, Harrisonburg-Staunton, and Roanoke were also among the ten cleanest places to live, making our state by far the best represented.

Air pollution has known links to a multitude of ailments, among them cancer, stroke, heart disease, and asthma, and in 2014 the World Health Organization said that it considers air pollution the largest single environmental health risk. According to them this problem accounts for 1 in 8 deaths worldwide.

There’s both good and bad news in the air quality trends. Across the US air quality has dramatically improved with the passing of environmental laws like the Clean Air Act. According to the EPA, emissions of pollutants and precursor pollutants has decreased by 77% since 1970.

Globally, however, there’s been an uptick in air pollution in the last decade as rapidly developing nations like India, Bangladesh, and China ramp up their economies, and it’s uncertain when these nations will enact and enforce similar legislation to that of the US.

With the future of the world’s air quality unclear, it’s at least comforting to know that our small part of the globe excels at keeping the air fresh.

The only other state with multiple locations on the list can be said to be North Carolina, with the inclusion of Wilmington, and because some northeastern parts of the state were considered Hampton Roads for the study.
