Virginia Beach Named 3rd Safest Large City in the Country

Virginia Beach has recently been recognized as the 3rd safest large city in the United States, according to a ranking by MoneyGeek.

To rank the safest cities in the United States, MoneyGeek utilized standardized crime statistics reported to the FBI from 2022, the latest available data. They included the population of each city in their analysis to determine crime rates per 100,000 people, using data provided by the FBI and the Census Bureau’s 1-year American Community Survey.

For cities with populations over 100,000 that lacked FBI data, MoneyGeek conducted individualized research on standardized crime statistics. It’s important to note that data for 2022 was limited for cities in Florida, Illinois, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, leading to the omission of cities that did not report murder and rape. Overall, MoneyGeek’s analysis encompassed 302 cities.

Additionally, they incorporated research by professors Kathryn McCollister and Michael French of the University of Miami and Hai Fang of the University of Colorado, Denver, to evaluate the cost of crime to society. This integration of findings provided a comprehensive understanding of the societal cost of crime within individual cities.

Virginia Beach’s Safety Achievements

Virginia Beach has consistently low crime rates compared to other large cities. Recent statistics show a decrease in both violent and property crimes, contributing to its high safety ranking. The city’s proactive approach to crime prevention and community policing has played a significant role in maintaining these low rates.

Community engagement is at the heart of Virginia Beach’s safety strategy. Programs such as neighborhood watch groups, youth engagement initiatives, and public safety workshops help foster a sense of responsibility and collaboration among residents. These programs not only prevent crime but also build trust between the community and law enforcement.

Virginia Beach’s ranking as the 3rd safest large city places it just behind two other notable cities. This achievement is even more impressive when considering the size and diversity of Virginia Beach compared to its peers. In the regional context, Virginia Beach outperforms many neighboring cities in terms of safety, making it a standout in the area.

Benefits of Being a Safe City

Safety is a crucial factor in the overall quality of life. Residents of Virginia Beach enjoy peace of mind knowing that they live in a secure environment. This sense of safety contributes to better mental health, community cohesion, and a higher standard of living.

Virginia Beach’s reputation for safety makes it a desirable destination for tourists. Visitors can explore the city’s beautiful beaches, vibrant culture, and numerous attractions without worrying about their safety. This positive perception enhances the city’s appeal and boosts its tourism industry.

A safe city attracts businesses and fosters economic growth. Companies are more likely to invest in areas where their employees feel safe, leading to job creation and economic development. Virginia Beach’s safety ranking is a valuable asset in attracting new businesses and supporting local economic initiatives.

Virginia Beach’s recognition as the 3rd safest large city in the country is a testament to the hard work and dedication of its residents, law enforcement, and community leaders. This accolade not only enhances the city’s reputation but also reinforces the importance of safety in fostering a thriving, vibrant community. Whether you’re a resident or a visitor, Virginia Beach offers a secure and welcoming environment for all.
