Staying active is important for maintaining good health and well-being, and it’s no secret that where you live can have a significant impact on your ability to lead an active lifestyle.
Some cities are better equipped than others with resources that promote physical activity, such as parks, fitness facilities, and bike-friendly infrastructure. To find out which cities were the best for an active lifestyle, personal finance website WalletHub conducted a study that compared the most populated U.S. cities across 38 key indicators, including the number of sports clubs and facilities, the availability of bike-sharing programs, and the average monthly fitness club fee.
According to the study, the top five cities for an active lifestyle are:
- Honolulu, HI
- Portland, OR
- San Francisco, CA
- Chicago, IL
- San Diego, CA
Virginia Beach ranked 45th overall. With its miles of beaches and pleasant weather, Virginia Beach is an ideal location for outdoor activities such as swimming, surfing, and paddleboarding. Additionally, the city boasts a plethora of sports facilities, including over 264 parks and 3 sports complexes, making it easy for residents to stay active year-round.
Another reason why Virginia Beach is an excellent city for an active lifestyle is its extensive network of bike trails. The city has over 300 miles of bikeways and trails, making it easy for cyclists to commute to work, run errands, or simply enjoy a leisurely ride. The city’s commitment to cycling is evident in its designation as a “Bicycle Friendly Community” by the League of American Bicyclists.
While WalletHub’s study revealed that some cities are better equipped than others, Virginia Beach’s ranking in the top 50 cities for an active lifestyle is a testament to its commitment to promoting healthy living. With its abundance of parks, sports facilities, and bike trails, it’s a great place for anyone looking to stay active and healthy.
