As one of the thirteen original colonies, Virginia has its share of outdated legislation still on the books, and one such code was removed last year with a stroke of the governor’s pen.
For 200 years it’s been possible to incur a fine for simply saying bad words in the state, but no longer. Last year the governor signed HB 1071 which “Removes the crime of profane swearing in public, which is currently punishable as a Class 4 misdemeanor.”
So now you can curse to your heart’s content in the Old Dominion, but please curse responsibly.
