Virginia Beach is one of the ten best cities in the country for people with disabilities, according to a new report by personal finance website WalletHub.

Twenty-six percent of the US population lives with a disability, and the researchers at WalletHub wanted to know which cities were the best at helping these residents overcome their extra challenges.

To find out they compared 182 cities using 34 indicators grouped into three categories: economy, quality of life, and healthcare. The heaviest-weighted factors were median earnings for people with disabilities, their employment rate, the share of people with disabilities living in poverty, share of a city’s population living with a disability, and percentage of residents who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The best city in the country for people with disabilities this year is Minneapolis, WI. Virginia Beach makes it into the top 10 at number 9, mostly on the strength of its fantastic economy stats, which give it the top score in that category. The remainder of the top three are Pittsburgh, PA and St. Louis, MO. The only other Mid-Atlantic city in the top ten was Columbia, MD.

Virginia Beach isn’t the only Hampton Roads city to be praised for how livable it is for people with disabilities. Earlier this year MoneyGeek called Newport News the 14th-best city for workers with disabilities, and they called Norfolk the 19th-best.

And if you’re looking for some tips on how to enjoy the beach, at the strip we have beach accessible wheelchairs available on the sand at boardwalk ramps at 2nd, 17th, 24th, and 36th Streets. There are also paths from the boardwalk to the lower beach at those streets, and every four or five blocks all along the strip.
