Virginia Beach City Council has recently announced that dogs will be allowed on the boardwalk for longer hours during the summer months.

The previous restrictions on our furry friends had been in place since 2014, and limited the time that dogs were allowed on the boardwalk to the morning hours of 6am to 10am. Starting this summer the new extended hours will allow dogs to be on the boardwalk from 6am to 7pm.

City Council hopes that this move will make the Virginia Beach boardwalk more welcoming and accommodating to dog owners, while still maintaining a clean and safe environment for all visitors.

During the summer (between Memorial Day and Labor Day) dogs are never allowed on the beach between Rudee Inlet and 42nd Street.

North of 42nd Street dogs are allowed on the beach before 10 a.m. and after 6 a.m., and must be under the control of owners if unleashed.

During the off-season dogs are allowed at any time on the public beaches and boardwalk, but must be leashed on the boardwalk.
