Improvements Coming to Lynnhaven Parkway Near Lynnhaven Mall
On July 22, 2025, city officials broke ground on a major improvement project that promises to transform the Lynnhaven Parkway corridor—particularly the stretch around Lynnhaven Mall. This effort, backed by more than $5 million in funding, marks a significant step toward making the area safer, more accessible, and better connected for pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and local businesses.
Why the Project Matters
Lynnhaven Parkway is one of the busiest corridors in Virginia Beach, especially near Lynnhaven Mall, a major shopping and entertainment destination. Over the last two years, this segment has seen more than 100 crashes, highlighting longstanding concerns about pedestrian safety and traffic flow.
Beyond the traffic concerns, the area has lacked continuous sidewalks, consistent lighting, and reliable infrastructure to support the growing number of people who work, shop, and travel through the district every day.
What’s Changing
The Lynnhaven Parkway Corridor Improvements Project is tackling these challenges head-on. Here’s what’s in the works:
Expanded Pedestrian and Bicycle Access
Continuous sidewalks on both sides of the road
A multi-use path to support safer bike and foot traffic
Highly visible, textured crosswalks to make crossings safer
Lighting and Landscaping Upgrades
Modern streetlights for better nighttime visibility
New landscaped medians and trees
Gateway signage near the I-264 interchange to welcome drivers and pedestrians
Drainage and Environmental Improvements
Upgrades to the stormwater drainage system to reduce flooding
Installation of water quality structures to help manage runoff and protect local ecosystems
Signal and Safety Enhancements
New pedestrian traffic signals
Upgrades to fencing and barriers near highway ramps to prevent pedestrian shortcuts and accidents
Timeline and Investment
Construction is officially underway and is expected to continue through the end of 2027. While some lane shifts may occur, no full road closures are planned during construction. The City of Virginia Beach is coordinating efforts to minimize disruption while delivering long-term benefits.
A Boost for the Local Community
Local leaders—including Councilmember Michael Berlucchi—have emphasized that these changes go beyond infrastructure. They’re about revitalizing a core economic area and improving the quality of life for residents, workers, and visitors alike.
Lynnhaven Mall anchors a dynamic retail corridor with over 180 stores, restaurants, and entertainment options. The improvements aim to support this hub by making it easier and safer to access—not just by car, but by foot and bicycle, too.
Business owners in the area have welcomed the changes, noting that safer streets and improved aesthetics could help attract new customers, reduce liability, and support the broader economy.
Looking Ahead
As the project moves forward, city officials plan to keep the public informed about milestones and progress. Community input will continue to be important, especially as construction reaches more heavily trafficked areas near the mall.
Whether you’re a daily commuter, a Lynnhaven Mall regular, or a nearby resident, expect noticeable changes in the coming months—and a vastly improved experience when the project is complete in 2027.
The Lynnhaven Parkway improvements represent more than new sidewalks and streetlights—they reflect a larger investment in Virginia Beach’s future. By addressing safety, accessibility, and aesthetics, the city is laying the groundwork for a corridor that works better for everyone.
