NFL Hall of Famer and Norfolk native Bruce Smith has been granted permission by City Council to develop a large apartment complex right across the street from the Scope Arena and Chrysler Hall.
Smith currently resides in Virginia Beach, but grew up in Norfolk and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. On Tuesday Norfolk City Council passed an ordnance permitting the sale of the parcel at the southeast corner of East Brambleton Ave and St. Paul’s Blvd to Bruce Smith Enterprise, LLC.
Where there’s now a parking lot Smith intends to build a mixed-income apartment complex called 78 At Saint Paul’s, a reference to the jersey number he wore during his nineteen years as a defensive end for the Bills and Redskins. It will be a six-and-a-half story structure with 287 units above 4,200 square feet of street level retail, and will have a pool, game room, gym, and a yoga studio.
The city has agreed to build a 500 space parking structure and reserve nearly 300 spaces for the new development, while the rest will be used by the Scope Arena and Chrysler Hall. The city estimates the development will bring in half a million dollars in tax revenue yearly.
