Virginia Beach’s Atlantic Park Surf Lagoon Is Almost Here

Virginia Beach’s surf scene is about to get a massive boost. The long-anticipated Atlantic Park Surf Lagoon — the centerpiece of a $350 million redevelopment of the iconic Dome site — is officially set to open its doors to the public on Saturday, August 16, 2025. This isn’t just another surf spot; it’s the first Wavegarden Cove in North America, and it’s bringing year-round, machine-perfect waves to the East Coast.

From Music Legend to Surf Innovation

The transformation of the old Dome site has been years in the making, driven in part by Virginia Beach native Pharrell Williams’ vision of a cultural and recreational hub. The original Dome, which once hosted concerts from the late 1950s until the early ’90s, is now reimagined as part of a 10-acre, mixed-use entertainment destination: Atlantic Park.

Earlier this year, the new concert venue at the Dome site reopened with a packed schedule, but the upcoming surf lagoon is the crown jewel.

A Surf Playground Like No Other

Covering 2.67 acres, the lagoon houses 46 wave-generating modules capable of producing up to 1,000 waves an hour. That’s over 20 different wave types, from mellow rollers perfect for beginners to barreling sections that will challenge advanced riders.

The lagoon has already been filled, and wave testing has been underway since June. Surfing sessions will run year-round, each lasting 55 minutes and averaging 12 waves per surfer. Pricing ranges from $91 to $161 per session, with surf-club memberships and pre-sale passes available. Daily beach passes will allow non-surfers to enjoy the atmosphere, complete with lounge chairs, cabanas, and food and beverage options.

Beyond the Waves

Atlantic Park is designed to be more than a surf spot. Plans include restaurants, shops, office space, residential units, and lodging — all built around the lagoon as the beating heart of the development. It’s an ambitious attempt to create a year-round coastal destination that blends recreation, entertainment, and community.

Why It Matters

For decades, East Coast surfers have faced the challenge of inconsistent swell. As Wavegarden’s Chief Commercial Officer put it, this facility is a “perfect location” to fill that void. Local leaders and developers see it as a project that could cement Virginia Beach’s reputation as not just a summer tourist hotspot, but a genuine surf capital.

The Countdown Is On

With the August 16 opening date locked in, the excitement is palpable. For locals, it’s a chance to ride flawless waves without leaving town. For visitors, it’s another reason to put Virginia Beach on the map — whether they come to surf, watch, or simply soak in the scene.

Atlantic Park Surf isn’t just adding a new attraction to the city; it’s rewriting what surfing means on the East Coast. And when the first waves break under the summer sun, Virginia Beach will be making history — one perfect set at a time.
