Hampton Roads is well represented among the country’s top digital cities again this year, according to the Center for Digital Government.
The yearly survey is used to spotlight ten cities in each of five different population groups that best utilize technology to serve their citizens, and this year Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Hampton all appear.
In the 250,000—499,999 population range Virginia Beach is in 3rd place, behind just Long Beach, CA and Durham, NC. The Beach did a lot to earn its spot this year, including hiring the city’s first chief performance officer. The new office will establish metrics for city agencies, and all agencies will be required report performance stats to the office in an effort to develop a more efficient and effective government.
The city has been a top digital city for five straight years now, and was the top digital city in 2017 and 2018.
In the 125,000—249,999 population range, Hampton and Norfolk placed 9th and 10th, respectively. Hampton was praised for adopting widespread digital signage throughout the city, and Norfolk for achieving a silver certification in the What Works Cities program, which encourages cities to use data to better meet their citizens’ needs.
Around the rest of the state, Alexandria placed 2nd in the 125,000-249,999 category, while Roanoke and Lynchburg featured in the 75,000-124,999 category at 4th and 5th, respectively. In the smallest category (up to 75,000) Danville was 2nd.
