First Fridays Return to Downtown Norfolk with Music, Food, and Community Energy
After a four-year break, one of Norfolk’s most popular downtown traditions is making a comeback. First Fridays, the free monthly block party series, is returning to Granby Street—bringing live music, food trucks, and a high-energy vibe to the heart of the city.
Hosted by Downtown Norfolk Council, this open-air event invites locals and visitors alike to reconnect with the vibrant culture that makes downtown special. The first event kicks off on Friday, August 1, 2025, from 5:00 to 8:30 PM, on the 300 block of Granby Street near TCC Plaza, and will return again on September 5 before continuing in the spring.
What to Expect
Live Music That Moves the Street
Each First Friday will feature top-notch live music, curated in collaboration with LAVA Presents. The August 1 event will be headlined by No BS! Brass, a high-octane brass band known for turning any space into a dance floor. Expect everything from indie and funk to soul and rock across the series.
Food, Drinks, and Local Flavor
The party doesn’t stop at the stage. A variety of food trucks and local vendors will line Granby Street, offering everything from street tacos and gourmet fries to local brews and sweet treats. It’s a great opportunity to support small businesses and discover new favorites.
A Gathering Space for the Community
Beyond the entertainment, First Fridays is a chance to reconnect with the community. Whether you’re downtown for happy hour, a casual night out, or just curious about the buzz, this event is designed to be welcoming and walkable. The event is free and open to all ages, and attendees are encouraged to explore nearby shops and restaurants as part of the fun.
Why It Matters
The return of First Fridays signals more than just a series of parties—it’s a statement about Norfolk’s ongoing investment in public spaces, cultural events, and local talent. With support from the City of Norfolk and community organizations, these events aim to reenergize downtown and give people a reason to return, explore, and celebrate what the city has to offer.
