A lot of those laws passed in the 2020 legislative session in Virginia go into effect Wednesday night, and due to their breadth, could mark the beginning of a new commonwealth for a large number of people . Listed below are just a few of the highlights.
Highlights
- Election day becomes a state holiday
- Absentee ballots available for all, with no excuse needed
Voting

Healthcare
- Virginians can only be charged a max of $50 copay per month for insulin prescriptions
LGBTQ+
- Gender and sexual orientation become protected classes under Virginia law
Women
- Virginia becomes the 38th State to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment
- Remove requirements for 24hr waiting period before an abortion, and the requirement to receive printed counseling materials
Marijuana
- Marijuana is decriminalized ($25 max fine for simple possession) and the state will undertake a study to determine how best to legalize
Guns
- Background checks required for all gun purchases
- A limit of one handgun purchase per month
- Those with a protective order issued against them cannot possess guns
