Turning Pages, Building Bridges

Newport News has set its sights on the horizon and is ready to build a new chapter in its literary landscape.

The current Grissom Library was completed in 1977, and is named after one of the city’s most famous residents, Virgil ‘Gus’ Grissom, NASA astronaut and the second American to reach space.

As time marches forward, so too do the demands of the community, and challenges faced by the aging library have sparked the need for a transformation, igniting the vision for a new Grissom Library.

Newport News City Council voted last week to spend nearly $40 million to move the library about a mile away to a new state-of-the-art facility. The new Grissom Library heralds a new era of accessibility and opportunity for Newport News residents.

With expanded resources and services, including cutting-edge technology and diverse programming, the library will empower individuals of all ages to pursue their passions and unlock their full potential. From children discovering the joy of reading to adults seeking lifelong learning, the library will be a catalyst for growth and enrichment.

Beyond its architectural beauty, the new Grissom Library will champion sustainability and innovation. With a focus on green building practices and the integration of eco-friendly technologies, the library will serve as a model of environmental stewardship. Embracing the digital age, the library will offer cutting-edge resources and services to meet the evolving needs of our community in the 21st century.

Details about the new Grissom library are limited, but the library is expected to be two stories and over 51,000 square feet, and the architect is Quinn Evans. Construction is expected to begin in about a year, and could be completed by the end of 2026.
