Virginia took another big, progressive leap on Wednesday when hundreds of new bills went into effect, with them the Virginia Values Act, Senate Bill 868.
The bill prohibits discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation at work and in housing, as well as in applying for credit and acquiring accommodations. But the bill goes further, also extending extra protections based on race, religion, age, sex, veteran status, pregnancy and more.
Governor Northam said in a statement, “This legislation sends a strong, clear message—Virginia is a place where all people are welcome to live, work, visit, and raise a family. We are building an inclusive Commonwealth where there is opportunity for everyone, and everyone is treated fairly. No longer will LGBTQ Virginians have to fear being fired, evicted, or denied service in public places because of who they are.”
