Ease yourself into academia.
- Glen Pearson
Higher education is more accessible now than ever, and those who go through secondary school are reaping the benefits later in the job market.
The Census Bureau’s stats from 2016 show that the average earnings of college graduates was nearly twice that of those whose highest degree was attained in high school ($35k for high school graduates versus $65k for college graduates).
The US is also more educated than ever, with a third of adults over 25 having a 4 year degree. In 2014, 67 percent of Virginia’s high school graduates enrolled in college, and about a quarter of them enrolled in 2 year colleges.
One of the best tools available to this subset of students is the guaranteed admission agreement.

Guaranteed Admissions Agreements
The state of Virginia provides a convenient, low-cost way to go from one of its two year colleges to a four year school using guaranteed admissions agreements, or GAA’s.
With this program, a person can attend classes at one of the four Tidewater Community College campuses (in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Portsmouth) and after completing two years there, transfer to a four year school, so long as certain requirements – like a satisfactory GPA – are met.

With our local science and tech industries continuing to grow year by year, one might want to pursue a transfer degree in Science, that sees them transfer to ODU after two years of study.
Using the TCC website’s program guide search, we can search for the Associate of Science degree and find the following:
The Associate of Science (A.S.) degree program in Science prepares students to transfer to a four-year college or university to pursue a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in science leading to careers in fields such as biology, chemistry, dental hygiene, forestry, general science, geophysical science, mathematics, medical technology, nuclear medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and physics. The program also prepares students for transfer into baccalaureate degrees leading to advanced studies in medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine. Courses required for the Science degree are available on all four campuses.
The program consists of 19 courses for a total of 60 credit hours, and requires only two prerequisites, one for math and one for English composition.
Stay on top of your progress by staying in contact with your counselors and following the state’s guide to preparing for your transfer:
And If you decide that GAA’s aren’t right for you, don’t worry! You can still apply and transfer to 4 year colleges when it’s time.
